Unlike traditional law entrance exams, NLSAT evaluates candidates not just on their knowledge, but on their critical thinking, analytical abilities, and aptitude for rigorous legal reasoning through a unique two-part structure (Objective and Subjective).

Decoding the Test
NLSAT Exam Pattern
The NLSAT assessment is notoriously rigorous, divided into two distinct parts administered in a single seating. It demands both sharp analytical reasoning and articulate subjective expression.
Total Duration: 150 Minutes
Both Part A (Objective) and Part B (Subjective) must be attempted within the continuous 2.5-hour timeframe. Time management is the most critical success factor in NLSAT.
The Qualifying Filter
75 Multiple Choice Questions
Each question carries 1 mark. Comprises comprehension-based objective blocks.
Core Subjects
Reading Comprehension, Current Affairs, and Critical Reasoning. No prior legal knowledge required.
Negative Marking
-0.25 marks deducted for every incorrect answer. Unanswered questions do not attract a penalty.
Crucial Constraint: Part A acts strictly as a qualifying filter. Only those who clear the Part A cutoff will have their Part B evaluated.
Analytical Writing
10 Legal Aptitude / Reasoning Questions
Short analytical answers worth 6 marks each (Total 60 Marks). Tests problem-solving and articulation based on legal principles.
1 Extensive Essay
One essay worth 15 marks (approx. 500 words). Typically covers contemporary socio-legal or political issues.
Zero Negative Marking
As a purely subjective assessment, there is no negative marking in Part B.
Merit List Calculation: The final merit list is prepared by combining the scores of Part A (75) and Part B (75), plus the final interview score (10 marks, for those shortlisted).
Comprehensive NLSAT Syllabus
The National Law School Admissions Test (NLSAT) is divided into two distinct parts. Mastering both the objective and subjective sections is crucial for securing a seat at NLSIU Bengaluru.
Reading Comprehension
Strategy
Focus on reading editorials from The Hindu and The Indian Express. Practice extracting the main idea, author's tone, and inference-based questions rapidly.
Common Pitfall
Skimming too fast and missing nuances, or over-relying on outside knowledge instead of the passage provided.
Critical Reasoning
Strategy
Master the fundamentals of deductive and inductive logic. Identify premises, conclusions, and assumptions clearly before evaluating options.
Common Pitfall
Confusing correlation with causation. Failing to identify the specific flaw in the author's reasoning.
Current Affairs
Strategy
Cover major legal, national, and international events of the past 12 months. Pay special attention to landmark Supreme Court judgments and constitutional developments.
Common Pitfall
Memorizing trivial facts instead of understanding the broader socio-legal context of current events.
