IPMAT 2027 Sectional Cutoff: Can You Get Selected with a Low Score in One Section?

IPMAT sectional cutoffs matter for IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak aspirants. Understand how individual section scores affect shortlisting and how to prepare for each section.

IPMAT 2027 Sectional Cutoff: Can You Get Selected with a Low Score in One Section?

Preparing for IPMAT 2027 involves more than achieving a high overall score. Students also need to understand how individual section scores affect their chances of getting shortlisted for admission. A candidate might perform exceptionally well in Verbal Ability but struggle with Quantitative Ability. Whether that performance is enough depends on the admission rules of the institute they are targeting.

Understanding the IPMAT 2027 sectional cutoff is particularly important for students preparing for IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak, as their selection processes differ. The official admission criteria for 2027 should be checked when released. Until then, the latest available 2026 admission documents offer useful guidance on how these institutes approach shortlisting.

What Is a Sectional Cutoff in IPMAT?

A sectional cutoff is the minimum score a candidate must achieve in an individual exam section to remain eligible for the next stage of the admission process. It is different from an overall cutoff, which refers to the minimum total score required to qualify for consideration.

For example, imagine a student who scores well in Verbal Ability but performs poorly in both Quantitative Ability sections. Even if the student's combined score appears competitive, a sectional cutoff could prevent them from being shortlisted if they fail to meet the required minimum in one section.

This is why IPMAT aspirants should not prepare exclusively to maximise their total marks. They must also build sufficient proficiency across the sections relevant to their target institute.

Does IIM Indore Have a Sectional Cutoff for IPMAT?

Yes. According to IIM Indore's official admission procedure for the 2026–31 batch, candidates needed positive raw scores and minimum marks in each of the three sections to enter the pool considered for Personal Interview shortlisting. The institute's Admissions Committee decides the minimum cutoff for each section and category.

The three sections in the 2026 IPMAT Indore pattern were:

  • Quantitative Ability (MCQ): Multiple-choice mathematics questions.
  • Quantitative Ability (Short Answer): Mathematics questions requiring candidates to enter their answers.
  • Verbal Ability (MCQ): Questions assessing English language and verbal skills.

Clearing the minimum sectional requirements does not automatically guarantee a Personal Interview call. IIM Indore also uses an Aptitude Test Score to shortlist candidates from the eligible pool. In its 2026 admission procedure, the Verbal Ability component carried a weight of 50, while each Quantitative Ability component carried a weight of 25. Shortlisted candidates then proceeded to the interview and final selection stages.

For IPMAT 2027, students should wait for the official admission procedure before relying on any specific minimum marks. Previous-year cutoffs can help with preparation, but they should not be treated as guaranteed targets.

Does IIM Rohtak Have a Sectional Cutoff for IPMAT?

IIM Rohtak's published 2026 admission FAQ states that there is no sectional cutoff for its IPM Aptitude Test. Its admission process considers the aptitude test score alongside other components, including past academic performance and the Personal Interview.

This distinction matters for students deciding how to prepare. A candidate targeting IIM Rohtak should understand the overall scoring requirements, while a candidate targeting IIM Indore must also pay attention to the minimum performance required in each section.

However, the absence of a sectional cutoff does not mean that students should ignore an entire subject. A weak section can still reduce the overall score and affect competitiveness. Students should confirm the final IPMAT 2027 rules through the respective institute's official website when the new admission documents become available.

Sectional Cutoff vs Overall Cutoff: What Is the Difference?

The two terms describe different parts of the shortlisting process.

A sectional cutoff checks whether a candidate has achieved the minimum required performance in a particular section. An overall cutoff checks performance across the exam as a whole.

This difference can influence preparation strategy. For an exam with sectional requirements, scoring very highly in one section may not compensate for falling below the minimum in another. In an exam without sectional cutoffs, the total score may play a more direct role in initial shortlisting, although the complete selection criteria still apply.

Students should therefore identify which exam they are preparing for before setting score targets. The IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak names are often used interchangeably in casual conversation, but their exam structures and admission processes should be studied separately.

How Should You Prepare for IPMAT 2027 Sectional Cutoffs?

1. Identify Your Weakest Section Early

Begin with a diagnostic mock test or a set of questions from each relevant section. Review your performance to identify where you lose marks, whether through conceptual gaps, slow calculations, vocabulary difficulties or incorrect answers.

Do not rely only on your total score. A strong overall result can hide a section that needs more attention, particularly when preparing for an exam with sectional minimums.

2. Build Your Fundamentals Before Chasing High Scores

For Quantitative Ability, strengthen mathematical concepts and practise applying them to different question types. For Verbal Ability, build reading consistency, vocabulary in context and comprehension skills. If your target exam includes Logical Reasoning, practise the relevant reasoning question types as well.

A clear understanding of fundamentals helps you approach unfamiliar questions more confidently instead of depending entirely on memorised shortcuts.

3. Track Section-Wise Performance in Every Mock

After each mock test, record your score, accuracy, time spent and the types of questions you found difficult. Compare results across multiple tests to identify consistent weaknesses.

If one section repeatedly underperforms, adjust your study schedule to include more focused practice for it. Avoid changing your entire preparation strategy because of a single difficult mock.

4. Practise Under Exam Conditions

Section-wise practice is useful for learning concepts, but full-length mocks help you understand how your performance changes under time pressure. Use both methods: practise specific topics when building skills and complete timed tests to evaluate your overall readiness.

Review incorrect answers carefully. Understanding why an answer was wrong is more valuable than simply attempting a larger number of questions without reviewing them.

5. Set Separate Targets for Each Section

Instead of setting only one total-score target, establish a realistic improvement target for every section. Use your recent mock performance as a starting point and revise your targets as your accuracy improves.

For IIM Indore aspirants, this approach helps ensure that no section is consistently neglected. For IIM Rohtak aspirants, it supports a stronger overall score across the tested areas.

Remember that your practice targets are preparation benchmarks, not official IPMAT 2027 cutoff marks.

Can You Get an IPMAT Shortlist If One Section Is Weak?

It depends on the institute's applicable admission criteria and the extent of the weakness. Under IIM Indore's 2026 procedure, failing to meet the minimum requirement in any one of the three sections would prevent a candidate from entering the eligible pool for Personal Interview shortlisting. IIM Rohtak's 2026 FAQ, by contrast, states that its aptitude test has no sectional cutoff.

Even so, students should aim for balanced preparation. A consistently weak section can limit the overall score, and clearing an initial cutoff is not the same as securing final admission.

The most practical strategy is to understand the rules for your target institute, measure your performance section by section and work on weaknesses well before the exam.
